My husband (Evan) and I met at a Birmingham Barons game. We were both fresh out of college (I went to Auburn and he went to Vandy) and had moved to Birmingham that summer to begin our first year of medical school at UAB. We were introduced through mutual friends at the baseball game and were pretty much inseparable ever since. We got married during our third year of medical school and graduated this past spring. We matched at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS and started residency last week. I am in Pediatrics, and my husband is in Emergency Medicine.
Planning a wedding during medical school was not an easy task, especially with the wedding venue (and my mother) being 4 hours away. Because I had limited free time in between my clinical rotations and studying for board exams, I took advantage of the amazing wedding vendors right there in Birmingham such as Mariee Ami, Ivory & White, Stacy Richardson, etc. which gave our wedding a Birmingham flair. I would not have survived it had it not been for Neillie, Louise and their team at Mariee Ami.
Our wedding venue (ceremony and reception) was in Point Clear, AL at the Grand Hotel Marriott, which is a short drive from where I grew up in Mobile. Evan was raised primarily in Montgomery, but a lot of his family are in New York and Philadelphia so we wanted a “one stop shop” venue that could host several wedding events, provide nice accommodations, and allow his family to get a small glimpse of the southern coast. We had a interfaith ceremony incorporating some Christian traditions from my upbringing and some Jewish traditions from my husband’s. Mariee Ami and Wildflowers worked together to design & create our chuppah that was more than I could have ever dreamed of for the center piece of our ceremony!!
One of the most memorable moments of our wedding day was receiving the wedding gift my husband gave me. One of our favorite movie is Up, so Evan created our own adventure book to give me on our wedding day. Much to my surprise, he had been saving everything (event tickets, love notes, cards, etc) since that first day we met at the Baron’s game. The first page of the scrapbook had the baseball game ticket and t-shirt he caught for me the day we met. It was such a special gift and really shows just how big of a heart my husband has! That was probably my favorite moment when I finally got to see the gift he had been working on for so many hours instead of studying 🙂
I found my dress at Ivory & White Boutique with the help of my mother and sister. Sloan at Ivory & White made our experience dress shopping so much fun! After trying on about 15 dresses, I finally found THE dress, which was nothing like what I thought I would pick out. The girls at Ivory & White were so great with squeezing me in for fittings with my crazy school schedule. They did such a amazing such, and I felt great in my dress.
