What does the name 31 Bits mean? The 31 part is derived from Proverbs 31 which is about a woman providing for her family and the BITS part is due to the fact that all of the necklaces are made out of bits of recycled paper.
How did the company get started? College student Kallie Dovel, traveled to Uganda in the summer of 2007, getting a first hand look at life in Northern Uganda. While she was there, she met women making paper beads but who lacked a plan to market and sell them. After spending time in their homes and hearing their stories, Kallie knew there had to be a way to give opportunities to her new friends in Uganda. She enlisted the help of her three best friends and they came up with the idea of 31 Bits.
What started as a program with 6 Ugandan women as a means to give them a fresh start has grown to over 99 Ugandan women. The purpose of 31 Bits is to empower these women to rise above poverty. During their 4 year program they earn an income, acquire an education, are provided with holistic care and are able to dream for the future. The goal is that at the end of their 4 year contract they will leave the 31 Bits program positively changed with the tools and means to sustain themselves and their families. They now have an education, a career, confidence and a voice.
