Q: How did you meet?
A: We were in the same Sunday School class as children and dated a few times in high school, but didn’t date seriously until we were in college. Tom was at Washington and Lee and I was at Mary Baldwin.
We were good friends in college. The summer after my freshman year, Tom called one afternoon and said, “I have called everyone I know and can’t get anyone to go out. Would you like to go to a movie tonight?” I said, “If I wasn’t so bored, I would be insulted. What time can you come?” By the end of the summer we were “pinned.” The rest is history!
Q: What is your secret to 50 years of marriage?
A: Trusting the Lord in the good times and the bad, and following the Biblical principles of marriage have been our “secret.” It also helps to “hold your tongue,” if at all possible!
Mary Anne and Tom have three children and seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. They have been married 54 years.
