How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Barnett and I met over 10 years ago! I was a junior in high school and he was a sophomore. I first noticed his beautiful hair and the fact that he didn’t dress like the other guys at our school. As girls do, I told my best friends about my new crush…and they set out to fix me up with him! Lucky for us, my friend’s boyfriend was driving Barnett home from school, and before I knew it, I was the one taking him–it was the perfect excuse to talk to him! Long story short, Barnett and I started dating…and the rest is history!
What was the feel that you wanted to accomplish for your wedding and how did you execute that. First and foremost, I wanted our guests to feel comfortable and at home at our wedding. I wanted to ensure that everyone enjoyed delicious food and drinks, and that they had a band that got them on the dance floor. With the help of Birmingham Country Club, we were able to execute an endless, fabulous spread of food and drinks–we even did a champagne tower for the ladies (my favorite drink), and a popcorn bar for the guys (Barnett’s favorite snack). Barnett and I had seen Jessie’s Girls perform at a Labor Day party in Cashiers, North Carolina, and knew hands down we wanted them to entertain our guests!
Other than that I wanted a feeling of elegance, and chicness with a French flair. I adore all things French, and so when we stumbled upon a Chanel couture runway show image (see attached picture) we knew we had our inspiration! With the help of our incredibly talented vendors we were able to transform the country club into our perfect wedding venue.
What was your venue (church and/or reception) and why did you select it? Barnett and I selected Independent Presbyterian Church for our church, and The Country Club of Birmingham for our reception venue. Both venues hold a special place in our hearts. Barnett’s family has been attending the church where we were married for generations. We both practically grew up at our reception venue–from long days swimming in the pool every summer as kids, to their delicious meals at Sunday brunch, to special dances and events throughout high school and college. We truly love both of our venues and cherish all of our memories there.
What about your wedding was unique to Birmingham? I wanted to transport our wedding guests to another place by transforming The Country Club into a French wonderland. We have been to countless, lovely weddings at the country club, but we wanted people to walk into the foyer and be amazed by the transformation. With the help of Design Productions and Sybil Sylvester, the foyer, ballroom, and other event rooms went from looking like a beautiful English manor, to a chic French palace. By rolling up the Oriental rugs, draping the wallpapered walls in white curtains, adding numerous crystal chandeliers to the towering ceiling, and then by placing understated yet gorgeous flowers everywhere, I believe we accomplished our goal!
Where did you find your dress? It’s funny that as a stylist, I never knew what kind of wedding dress I wanted to wear on our special day. I have styled countless bridal shoots, and have loved every dress I’ve had the pleasure of working with. But still I was uncertain of what kind of dress I wanted. I did know I adored the look of Elie Saab gowns–they had a vintage feel, as well as exuded pure elegance and sophistication. They were special. With the help of Brooke Mason at Ivory & White I was able to find a Monique Lhuillier gown that exhibited all of these qualities, and more! She went above and beyond, and helped me order my perfect dress from Monique Lhuillier’s showroom in NYC, since she did not carry this exact gown in her store. After initially feeling so uncertain, believe it or not it was the only dress I tried on. I knew the moment I saw it in person that it was the one.
How did I select my bridesmaids dresses? I styled a bridal shoot a few years ago where I styled all of the ‘bridesmaids’ in different dresses but in one color family. It turned out beautifully, and really stood out as something I wanted one day for my own wedding. As a Style Coach, I 100% believe that each woman has a unique body type, and not everyone looks good in the same silhouette. It was very important to me to flatter my bridesmaids silhouettes, and assist each one in selecting the dress the suited her style and body type beautifully. Also, with us having a late fall wedding I knew I wanted a rich, fall color palette. I selected varying shades of burgundy, wine, and jewel tone grape. After talking to each bridesmaid about their favorite and least favorite dress styles, as well as which color would look best with their skin tone, we selected a dress that each of my friends loved–and hopefully will wear again!
Any advice for current Birmingham Brides? I tell all of my engaged friends this exact piece of advice– on your wedding day do not let anything upset you or attempt to take away from the magic that is your wedding day. Drama is likely to unfold in one way or the other, but let it roll off your back and move on. Also, surround yourself with those you love that will make sure that you have the dream day that you deserve.
