How did you get the idea to start P.E.W.S.?
After two semesters of nursing school I realized I needed more creativity in my life. I met with an event planner and she mentioned she could never find church pews when she needed them. I half heartedly research the idea and then had to convince my newlywed husband that this was a risk worth taking. We had no idea how hard it would be. We have learned a lot in the past year and can’t wait to see what we continue to learn with each wedding.
How many pews do you have?
We now have seven styles and counting. P.E.WS. Is excited to announce the opening of a second location. Stay tuned to Facebook and our website to hear the announcement this week.
What is the most challenging and most rewarding part of your job?
The most challenging part of my job is trying not to stress out when we have multiple weddings in a weekend. I trust our employees but I’m always wanting to run ahead of schedule so that nothing goes wrong. As with most wedding vendors the most rewarding part of the job is hearing from the bride and her family after the wedding. Seeing pictures and hearing how much they love the pews makes it all worthwhile.
What is your favorite part of the Wedding Schedule?
Honestly I love the 30 seconds the bride and groom get to walk back down the aisle after being announced as husband-and-wife for the first time. They get to see their friends and family’s smiling faces and then run off squealing, jumping and kissing with excitement.
When did you realize your business had a fighting chance?
When The Birmingham News wrote a halfpage article and put us on the front of the Business Section last May. That was pretty surreal considering I’ve never taken a business class in my life.
What have you learned about yourself in the past year?
Personally I realize I’m not good at everything. That shouldn’t have been a surprise, but I thought I could do it all. I’m so thankful for friends, family and new friends in the wedding industry that I’ve helped encourage and advise me in this crazy adventured called small-business!
What is your favorite thing to share about your business?
I love that we are the first business of our kind. We are the first company in the country to provide church pews for rent and bulk. With style options and able to seat over 700 guests, it seems like a pretty big deal.
What other creative ventures are you involved in?
We could not be more pumped about the 2013 P.E.W.S. Decorating Competition on September 4th. It is a great opportunity to show off Alabama’s talented wedding industry and to enjoy a night at Vulcan while raising support for him.
