How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story
Christopher and I met in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in 2009. We were both ski bums and river rats but it was our southern roots and mutual love of Alabama Football that initially drew us to each other. We had both attended The University of Alabama at the same time but had never met there, even though we had friends that had dated! We believe fate intervened and brought us to each other at the right time. We continued to live in Jackson Hole while dating for almost five years.
What was the feel that you wanted to accomplish for your wedding and how did you executed that?
Since we met and fell in love in Wyoming, we really wanted our wedding to combine the rustic, natural beauty of the mountains with the romance of fall in the South. We used simple arrangements of garland, seasonal florals, rustic wood and antlers. We also added little details like buffalo nickel cufflinks, Alabama socks and even imported some beer from the Snake River Brewery in Jackson Hole for the reception. I loved the feel of it all and many of our guests expressed how “us” it was, which was the best compliment we could receive!
What was your venue (church and/or reception) and why did you select it?
Both our ceremony and our reception were held at Swann Lake Stables here in Birmingham. When we first viewed the stables, we knew it was the perfect venue for us. From the canoes and animals on the wall, to the rustic outdoor fireplace and location next to the Little Cahaba, it was the perfect place to combine our Southern and mountains feel.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding?
We were very lucky to book Kelli + Daniel Taylor Photography. I had another photographer lined up who backed out on us, so we were pretty stressed about finding the perfect photographers on a relatively short notice! Fortunately, when I contacted Kelli, they had our date available and we booked them right away. Aside from being amazing photographers, they also really understood our feel and were able to connect us with our florists, Hot House Design Studio, who we also loved. Ultimately, both vendors were the perfect match for us!
What was your favorite moment or part of the day?
Having both been river guides for many years, Christopher and I both have a strong connection to the water and had initially wanted to have our ceremony on the property down by the Little Cahaba River. Ultimately, the logistics behind this were too complicated so we compromised and decided to have our first look down there. This moment was easily the best of the day! We were secluded, away from any guests that may be arriving early and were able to have that special moment, right by the water, with our dog Huckleberry on the most beautiful day!
Any advice for current Birmingham Brides?
My advice for brides would be to make sure you have the perfect venue and vendors that you trust completely for your wedding, and the rest is easy. I was able to let the professionals do what they do best and not worry about every little detail. There are always going to be little details that you might have gone back and changed, but ultimately if you trust that your vendors understand and respect your vision, you can have the wedding of your dreams with half the stress!
